| Hekking, born in the Netherlands, moved to the United States at an early age. He painted primarily landscape and marine scenes, and exhibited at the National Academy in New York in 1859. For the majority of his life, Hekking lived in Detroit, Michigan, but also resided in Connecticut for a brief time. In addition, he spent some time in Paris studying painting. Hekking exhibited in 1865 at the Ladies' Michigan State Fair, at the Detroit Museum of Art in 1883, 1886, 1889, and 1949, and also with the Detroit Artists' Association in 1875 and 1893.
