| Born in Indonesia, Schouten moved to Belgium as a child. He was a painter of landscapes, flowers, and primarily animal scenes. Within his rather realistic landscapes, he specialized in the representation of poultry and fowl, and was especially prolific in this area of his oeuvre. Schouten studied at the Brussels Academy from 1876 to 1881, and it was here that he began to master the techniques he would employ for the duration of his career. In 1943, the city of La Haye in Holland organized a retrospective exhibition of his works.
