Brasseur, an artist of the Belgian school, was both a painter and a photographer.  A student at the Academy of Liege under A. Mambour in 1937, and then under Scauflaire and A. Dupagne, he received a very strong foundation in the arts early on in his life.  Winning the highly coveted and prestigious Prix de Rome in 1943, he was the first artist from Liege ever to accomplish such an honor.  Because of his accomplishments as an artist, he was given a position teaching the art of drawing from 1943 to 1978 at the Academy of Liege.

ERROR MSG          In his paintings, Brasseur strove to communicate realism.  He was quite fond of painting large murals focusing on an almost bizarre monumental realism.  It was his interest in these kinds of minute details that made photography an obvious choice for him once it became more developed as an artistic medium.  By 1965, he had devoted himself to photography almost completely.  In his photographs, he often seems to question society, and deals primarily with themes of youthfulness.  His paintings, however, served as a good starting point for his career in photography.
