LL: Edm. Van der Meulen

Edmond Van der Meulen began his career as a still-life painter. Born in Brussels, he spent his entire life in the city. He began his career in painting studying at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts under Edouard Duyck. Following his teachers advice, he gave up painting as an amateur and devoted himself to art.

Van der Meulen was a member of a school of artists that might be termed Belgian and Flemish Realist animal painters that emerged in in the mid 19th century. His preference was for dogs, and he developed an undisputed mastery in this field. Painting in the style of the famed Joseph Stevens, he created true portarits of dogs endowing his subjects with almost human personalities and expressions. Painting with a rich, heavy impasto applied in broad colorist strokes, Van der Meulen attempted to paint his models without idealizing them.

Van der Meulen is represented in numerous museums in Europe. He earned great success as an animalier due to his talent and unique portrayal of his subject matter..
