Boulanger, a painter of flowers and genre scenes, exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1827 (Deux Turcs) and in 1839 (Fleurs). Louis Boulanger, Annettes brother famous for his paintings, along with Delacroix, Gericault and others, was one of a group of young French rebels who revolted against the staid academic style of the time to join the ranks of the Romantics anxious to explore passion, imagination and violence through their painting. This softly painted and exquisitely observed bouquet of roses, with its almost Impressionistic brush strokes, must have offered a welcome change from the vulgarity and violence of the Romantic style of the time. Recorded: Benezit, Emmanuel. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs. (Paris: Librairie Grund, 1976).
