Clesse, born in Brussels at the turn-of-century, painted landscapes, still-lifes, and port scenes. After studying at the Brussels Academy, he worked in the studio of the painter Hermanus.  Clesse exhibited in the Belgian and foreign Salons from 1907 on.  He also put on several personal exhibitions.

ERROR MSGThe forests of Brussels, the coast of Belgium, and the north of France were among his favorite subjects.  His style and brush stroke are impressionistic and similar to the style of Verheyden and Courtens.  He is known as the painter of winter, frosted forests, hazy ponds, and frozen canals: simple and sober landscapes, producing a feeling of melancholy, not by the effects of opposing colors, but by the fineness of soft pastel tones supposing an attentive look at the atmosphere.
