| Bernier, an artist of the Belgian School, painted mostly animals, landscapes, and portraits. At the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels from 1883 to 1887, he was a student of Michel Van Alphen and a disciple of the famed landscape artist Alfred Verwee. He eventually became a master at painting horses and cattle, and his talent was thus appreciated by the best-known Belgian sportsmen. Bernier felt quite inspired by the country landscape around Veurne-Ambacht, and in 1893, co-founded a circle known as the "Le Sillon" Society.
