| A painter of the Dutch school, Jeannette Slager painted children, florals, and still-lifes, and also made many sketches. Coming from a very artistic family, she studied under her father, Petrus Marinas Slager (1841-1912), as well as under her brother, Piet Slager, in Den Bosch, Holland. Her other brother Frans Slager (1876-1953) studied at the Academy of Antwerp under F. Van Leemputten, going on to live in various locales such as Frankfurt, Italy, and Belgium. Having such an artistically developed family, Jeannette undoubtedly received a constant influx of ideas for her own work. She was surrounded by artists and their canvases throughout her life, and thus has a lot of experiences to draw from for her own paintings. Painting in an Impressionistic manner, Slager's brushwork is painterly yet precise. Her use of color is especially remarkable, as is her ability to communicate surface textures of different objects. In this painting, the geraniums appear soft and vibrant, and the copper pot shiny and smooth. The viewer is given small details with minimal brushwork, thus revealing her mastery of the art of painting. In order to celebrate the talent of Jeannette and the rest of the Slager family, the Museum Slager was opened in their hometown of Den Bosch. Here, one can see works executed by the entire family of talented artists.
