| A painter of the French school, Mein most typically executed genre scenes, portraits, landscapes and marine scenes. At first largely self-taught, he studied further under a number of well-established artists, including D. Magaud, Claverie, and M. Guindon at the Beaux-Arts Academy in Marseille. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1893, and continued to do so rather regularly for years to come, winning an honorable mention in 1920. Both a skilled painter and engraver, Mein became a professor at the Beaux-Arts of Marseille, where he himself had studied, in 1931. He was known primarily for his intimist scenes with a somewhat serious nature. His sensitivity to the subtle nuances of light is remarkable, as seen here in the manner in which he is able to re-create the soft light coming through the beautiful lace curtains. Also notable is his wonderful eye for detail and pattern, and his thoughtful palette.
