| A painter and an illustrator of the Belgian school, Swyncop studied the art of fine painting at the Academy of Brussels from 1892 to 1898 under C. Montald and the famed J. Portaels. He traveled to France, Spain and Italy in1900 after winning the prestigious Godecharle Prize in order to expand his artistic oeuvre, and was commissioned to paint important portraits of Baron de Favereau (now in the collection of the Brussels Senate) and Mr. Brand Whitlock, an ambassador to the United States. Aside from portraits, Swyncop also painted figures, landscapes and still lifes. Typically working in an Impressionistic style, Swyncop painted very tender and endearing portraits of children, as well as very graceful portraits of women. He was a member of the "Le Sillon" artistic circle, and exhibited primarily in Belgium rather regularly.
