An artist of the Danish school, Hansen was primarily a history painter, but also executed a number of architectural views and interiors.  A student at the Beaux Arts Academy in Copenhagen, he was later made a professor and then eventually Vice President of this institute as a result of his artistic accomplishments.

A relatively prolific artist, Hansen exhibited his pieces rather regularly.  He took part in exhibitions in Vienna in 1873, in both Munich and Berlin in 1889, and then again in Munich in 1890.  He was awarded an honorable mention for his work in Berlin in 1889.

In his paintings, Hansen's schooling and mastery of the art of painting is immediately noticeable, even to the untrained eye.  His use of perspective is relatively flawless, for all of his works seem to exhibit a great deal of depth.  The spaces he paints are painstakingly realistic in their details, a fact aided by his wonderful understanding of both color and texture.  This particular canvas serves as a very good example of Hansen's mature and developed style of painting.
