| A painter of the Belgian school, Bulens typically executed portraits and genre scenes in oil, watercolors, and lithographs. He was also a rather skilled miniaturist and drawer. Receiving the majority of his artistic education at the Fine Arts Academy of Molenbeek, he originally debuted in the artistic community as both a decorator and fresco painter. Later developing his talents in portraiture, he came to be known primarily as a figure painter working in the manner of the so-called "intimist" school. He participated in the popular Exposition Universelle in Brussels in 1910. Producing psychologically charged portraits and genre scenes, Bulens is particularly celebrated for the emotion and feeling he is so capable of importing into his canvases. His wonderful use of such a cheerful and vibrant palette aids him considerably in accomplishing this, as does his obvious overall grasp of the fine art of painting.
