An artist of the French school, Cancaret most often painted genre scenes, portraits, nudes and landscapes.  He was a student of the famed Bouguereau, whose oeuvre had a profound impact on Cancaret's own development as a painter.  He studied in addition under the masters Gabriel Ferrier and Laronze.  Between the years 1904 and 1952, he exhibited a number of canvases at the Salon des Artistes Francais, including Le soir in 1908 and Sur l'eau in 1909.
