Henri Barnoin painted scenes with people, landscapes, cityscapes, and marine scenes. Considered a Post-Impressionist, he studied under Dameron, A. de Richemont, and Merson. Barnoin was a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Franais where he was awarded Honorable Mention in 1909, a Silver Medal in 1921, a Gold Medal in 1935, and recognized for Outstanding Achievement in 1939. Primarily a landscape painter, Barnoin was recognized by his fellow French landscape artists with the Prix de l'Association. Animated scenes populated with farmers and villagers, fishermen and their boats, and all of the many quaint activities of the people of Brittany fired the imagination of Barnoin and made up the body of his uvre. Although Barnoin never strived to be uniquely original in his subject matter, he is, however, treasured and respected for his fluid and serene style, his exceptional technical ability, and his honest and deeply felt response to the simple life of the people of Brittany.
