| Josef Hoevenaar was trained in the studio of his father, the painter Willem Pieter Hoevenaar. Josef was an accomplished watercolorist. In his work, he focused on the typical Victorian subject matter of women and children, which glorified the role of the mother and homemaker. In The Nursery also illustrates Hoevenaars impressive control of the difficult watercolor medium. Another painting by Hoevenaar, The Decorating of the Christmas Tree, is owned by the Utrecht Museum of Art. Recorded: ERROR MSGUlrich Thieme and Felix Becker, Allemeines Lexicon Den Bildenden Kunstler. Leipzig: Veb E. A. S Seemann, 1981.
